The New Orleans and Carrollton Railroad was the forerunner of the twenty-first century St. Charles Avenue streetcar line. The company was chartered in 1833 and the line opened for business in 1835, connecting the city of New Orleans, La., with the nearby village of Carrollton. This was one of the first trolley systems built in the United States, and continued operations through the Civil War when the city was occupied.
